Anotated Bibliography - 5 Good Sources

Anonymous. “Tailgate Party” April 8, 2008.

Wikipedia does more than just provide the information that is listed but also is loaded with links to other sources of information on tailgating. This will come in handy as I look for pictures, and other information.

Cahn, Joe. Tailgating Trivia gathered from the Parking Lots across America. February 3, 2008

This website although not an academic source has a great collaboration of information about tailgating including the types of food and drinks enjoyed, some of the differences in tailgating depending on the location it is taking place among other things. There are a lot of neat facts and numbers to pull out of this website.

Lander, David “Tailgating: The History, The Ultimate American Pastime Combines Cars, Sports, and Food” October 2005, Volume 56, Issue 5

This article dives deep into the history of tailgating. There are also arguments to compare the experience of tailgating to some holidays such as Halloween or Thanksgiving. These two holidays engage the full range of holidays. Comparing tailgating to a great American family tradition such as Thanksgiving shows a sense of family for tailgaters who are often not related in any way.

Hansen, Keith. Tailgating, an American tradition : an in depth look at traditions in tailgating within the American Culture. Page 46, 29 cm. 2005.

I have not been able to read this article yet, however I have submitted to get it electronically soon. The description of it suggests that I will get information on tailgating and it’s effects within American Culture, as well as it’s history. Here is the description:
“Hansen discusses the American tradition of tailgating, as well as the elements and history that have aided to make it a phenomenon of recent history. Questions such as what makes this type of party so appealing, what is involved in tailgating, what are the common traditions, as well as just who tailgates are examined. In addition, the attachment tailgating has formed more commonly with football as apposed to other sports is discussed.”

Von Drehle, David. “The Art of Tailgating,” Time Canada; 11/12/2007, Vol. 170 Issue 20, p44-47, 4p

This article gives great insight into the history of tailgating, along with possible origins of the act of tailgating. This article also associates what is classified as tailgating with these possible origins. His ultimate stance is that the sense of togetherness established by events like tailgating has been around for hundreds of years and the practices at tailgating parties have changed little over time.
